Demystifying and meditating with malas

What are these mala beads that those crazy hippies keep wearing around?

It's more than a trend. It's a tool.

What is a mala?

"Mala" is the Sanskrit word for "meditation." A mala necklace consists of 108 beads, typically made from powerful stones that resonate with the intention of its wearer. The number 108 has a lot of meaning, as explained here.

Choosing your mala

Often when you're purchasing a mala, it comes with a description of its stones and the power of the mala. For example, it could be made from a grounding stone or a stone that helps to open the throat chakra to aid in communication. My best advice is to read these descriptions AFTER naturally choosing a mala that seems to "speak" to you. Trust your instinct. I find that when I'm drawn to a mala, its description resonates with me. We are wise.

Meditating with your mala

To meditate with your mala, choose an intention or mantra. I typically use an "I am" statement such as:

  • I am enough
  • I am light
  • I am grateful
  • I am love
  • or just simply, I am

Repeat this intention or mantra 108 times as you spin each bead toward your body, receiving that intention. I use my ring finger and thumb — you are supposed to avoid using the index finger because this finger represents the ego.

Charging your malas

full moon to charge your mala

Malas, as with any stone, need to be charged. You can charge them in the sunlight or moonlight. I like to let them soak in the moonlight by placing them in the window or even outside.

You can also give them a good charge of energy by using them. Each time you meditate with them or wear them you are pouring that energy into them. I use the "I am enough" mantra with one of my malas and every time I wear it I feel its power. I am enough.

Here's a handy little chart describing some methods of charging.

Crazy hippie magic or legit?

I'm into this stuff. I like stones, malas and meditation. I believe in the power of the mind. I believe in the power of energy.

That being said, it is quite possible that I only feel this power because I believe in it. It could be a placebo effect. And if that's true, I'm totally cool with it. Because the benefits are great. :)

You can find a lot more in-depth information about malas out there. Even entire books. But I wanted to give you a 101 so the next time you see me or one of your other crazy hippie friends wearing these beads, you'll understand why. And perhaps if this resonates with you, you'll be drawn to try a mala meditation yourself!
