Friday Faves: Shoe edition

Friday Faves time! This week's topic: SHOES.

I wouldn't call myself a shoe person necessarily, but I am particular when it comes to my activewear. The wrong shoes can cause injury (I've learned the hard way) and just make things more difficult.

Running Shoes

Top Pick: Ghost by Brooks

Brooks are my favorite running shoes. My feet are strange in that I supinate. (Most people are neutral to overpronators.) These give me just the support I need and make me feel like I’m running on clouds (when they’re new).

Here’s a pro tip for you: If you read my yoga pants post, you know I buy a lot of my activewear on 6pm.com. They sell Brooks shoes. Often they have last season’s colors, but when it comes to my distance running shoes, looks are secondary to function. And if I can save a few bucks, I’m all for it.

Second Choice: Asics

My feet are just so special. In addition to supination, they are also very narrow (I get it from my old man). Asics shoes tend to fit my narrow feet better than some other brands. I like these trail shoes quite a bit.

Gym Shoes

Top Pick: Nike Free

I’ve been told some bad things about Nike shoes. But darn it they look nice. And when I’m in the gym, I’m not running long distances, so I haven’t had any issues with wearing Nike shoes there. The pair I’ve been wearing for awhile are some black Nike Free’s I picked up at the Nike Outlet store. But I’d be lying if I said I picked them for any other reason than I liked the way they looked. Here’s a similar pair online.

To and From Yoga

I do this a lot. So I have three faves. Ready?

Top Pick: Bokos sandals

Disclaimer: The company sent these to me to try. But they do not disappoint! I prefer their slip-on style over flip flops and they are super durable. I wear these to and from yoga (especially hot yoga), and out in the yard. Though I haven’t yet made it to the pool, they’ll be perfect for that as well. I love that I can just hose them off or stick them in the dishwasher for easy care.

BONUS! Here’s a discount.

Bokos is giving you guys 20% off your purchase at bokosusa.com. Just use the code BURBS at checkout. Expires 8/1/15.

Second Choice: Sanuk Yoga Sling

I saw these in the store last year and was just checking them out. The store clerk came over and must have sensed that I was a yogi because he said, “Did you know those are made of recycled yoga mats?” SOLD. But seriously the yoga mat foot bed is super comfortable. I wear these beyond trips to the studio.

Third Choice: Birkenstock’s Madrid Sandal

These have the look of the back-in-style Birkenstock (which IMHO, never went out of style), but they are constructed from EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate), making them more lightweight and washable. Also, a lot less expensive. So there’s that, too. These are third on the list only because I got the white ones, and I’m trying to keep them clean. The Bokos are even easier to take care of, so I feel better throwing them around.

Fun Shoes

Tom's!!!

When I’m not on the trail or in the studio, I still need to wear shoes. And my absolute favorite shoes are Tom’s. I only have one pair of the “traditional” Tom’s, and I wear them the least often of all my shoes. I love their wedges, and my friend got me a pair of these heels for my birthday that I wear ALL THE TIME. They’re comfortable, they look great and they do good. Win, win, win.
